F.C. Bartlett: The Meaning of Memory

Frederick Bartlett’s work appealed to me when I first encountered it while studying for a heavily experimental and behaviourally based psychology degree. The idea that people were actively, even if erroneously, constructing their experiences was more appealing than the image of humans as being the products of their reinforcement regimes as portrayed by the behaviourists. It made a connection with real life in that there was a search for meaning and that meanings were dependent upon culture. Sociologists would have grasped that straight away.
